Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Among the various wight loss surgeries, the mini gastric bypass surgery (MGB) is a laparoscopic, minimally invasive, simple, short very successful bariatric surgery.  The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) has excellent long term weight loss results and is considered a lower risk surgery.  This is a procedure which can be easily reversed or revised.  The Mini Gastric Bypass or MGB creates instead of a pouch, a long narrow tube that is then attached to the small intestine at about six feet from its starting point.  This bypasses the most highly absorptive section of the intestine.  There are no large incisions needed and this procedure is performed laparoscopically, lowering the risk or large surgical scars or hernias post op.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico: How does it work?

This surgery does not require large incisions on the abdomen as it is done through laparoscopic methods. It reduces stomach as a long narrow tube and partitioned into two sections, a smaller and a larger. The smaller portion is put to use and the larger one is sealed away from the small intestine.
This actually is similar to having a small stomach. This reduces food intake by a large extent. Small stomach cannot hold large quantity of food and hence less fat and calories are absorbed by the body.
Mini gastric bypass surgery in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico takes not more than 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. As the procedure is done by laparoscopic method, the recovery period is shortened. Patients can begin walking within two to three hours after the operation and will be discharged from the hospital within 48 hours.

How is the operation performed?

In the first part of mini gastric bypass surgery the stomach is divided and a small tube of stomach created which becomes the pouch.  This is the restrictive part of the procedure and means that only a very small amount of food can be taken at any one time.
Next, the surgeon brings up a loop of bowel (about 200cm long) and joins this to the lower part of the stomach pouch.  (The joining of bowel to bowel, or stomach to bowel is called an “anastamosis”).  This means that food passes from the small pouch into the small bowel where it meets the digestive juices which have moved downwards from the main part of the stomach.  In effect, therefore, about 2m of small bowel has been bypassed before absorption of food (and calories) can take place.  Fewer calories absorbed, means weight loss.

Sample Surgery Agenda for Mini Gastric Bypass patients in Tijuana and Cancun:

For International Patients that arrive from the US or Canada we pick them up at the International Airport in SanDiego or Cancun, Mexico and bring them to our hospital where we do all of the pre.op lab-work, EKG and chest x. ray.  Patients read and sign all the consent forms, make final payment and then get prepped for surgery.  They will then meet with their surgical team and have the chance to go over all the details of the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery.  Once surgery is completed, they will move to the post op area for two hours and then to their private hospital room to rest and recover for 48 hours.  48 hours post op, they meet once again with the surgical team to have their post op testing performed.  They will then be released and given post op indications and medications to take.  They will be transported to their accommodations for an additional 24 hours and they are then free to return to airport and home.

Mini Gastric Bypass surgery: Is it reversible?

The best feature of the mini gastric bypass surgery is that it is reversible. In cases the patients did not benefit as expected from the surgery, this reversibility makes it possible to undergo any alternative weight loss surgeries such as lap-band, gastric sleeve or full gastric bypass. This surgery also requires less post operative attention and makes for a much easier recovery.
