Protein Post op Bariatric Surgery

The feeling of satiety, which by definition is the complete absence of hunger, lasts a very long time once it has been tripped. Those who don’t use the pouch fill mechanism are often hungry as they never trigger their own response.

Those who don’t achieve satiety are always hungry and often graze by eating small amounts throughout the day. This somewhat fills the pouch but never to satisfaction, which is the strongest feeling we can create for ourselves. I know post ops who only take three bites of food but repeat it over and over – they lose weight – but live in fear and have no comfort that they have a safety net.

Protein First Works

It doesn’t matter how much is on the plate if we use ‘Protein First’ and ‘Vegetables Second’ as our portion control and only eat until we are comfortable and satisfied, somewhere between Bariatric Level 5 and 6.

As a guide, fix your plate with 4 to 6 ounces solid protein with salsa or sauce and 1/2 cup lower carb vegetable or chopped salad. A good example would be 2 small chicken thighs braised in pasta sauce with broccoli, tomato cucumber salad, or sautéed spinach.

Eat 1/2 of your Protein First, 1/2 the Vegetable Second then go in for small alternating bites of protein and vegetable until you recognize you are at a soft fill level of 6. Then stop. Thinking about levels 5 through 9 while eating is very empowering.

No Carbs

The biggest battle at six months post op is Head Hunger and if you are eating too many vegetables and pita chips and not enough protein first you are TOAST. (pun intended)

Imagine this : yogurt that doesn’t have sugar as an ingredient can have 18 grams of sugar that is not harmful.

Eliminating everything but protein and the carbs that have stuck to it, creates fullness or satiety, keeps you full for a very long time, and cuts down on the likelihood for justification of foods we should not be eating. Good carbs versus bad carbs – processed carbs versus unprocessed carbs – and the mother of them all SIMPLE carbs versus COMPLEX carbs. For a new post op… How about NO carbs? You have to admit that its much easier to remember. There we go, NO CARBS. Keeping it real, keeping it simple, keeping it real simple.

Medical Form

Solid Protein First
If we eat solid protein foods and all but eliminate all carbs, we strip down our food choices to the bare bones where we can then rebuild our new life with real food. This mindset works in the beginning and it can help patients who also regain weight. Keep it really simple – no carbs.

Bariatric Travel to Mexico

Make sure to compute all costs the low cost of medical treatment in developing countries are one of the main lures why people opt to travel overseas. The destinations they choose have a lower cost of living making their healthcare facilities have lower operating costs and lower wages – thus having lower treatment prices and increased savings.

When traveling abroad for medical treatment, many overlook other expenses and often forget that the cost only includes the cost of treatment. But in reality, the cost is a long list that involves airfare, accommodations and meals.

Here are some tips you can do to compute the costs when you travel abroad for medical care:

Know the detailed cost of every expense you’ll pay for:

Don’t easily give in to a low price deal. You might be surprised that the price escalates once package inclusions are added to the total price – the real price of the package.

When checking for treatment packages, ask for an all-inclusive price and know what are the package inclusions and exclusions. Packages vary from every medical provider but usual treatment packages include hospitalization fees, specialist’s professional fees, surgeon and anesthesia, lab tests, consultation fees, and airport transfers.

Be clear and don’t be reluctant to ask these kinds of questions

Book early to keep airfare costs low

Choosing airfare tickets with connecting flights instead of direct ones can also help you save money. Careful checking of ticket prices on comparison sites and airline sites can also help in getting the best deal.

Gastric Sleeve Post Operative Guidelines

In order to have a successful gastric sleeve surgery, patients will need to follow strict guidelines. These guidelines will help you lose weight, minimize complications, risks and even unwanted side effects.

Things to Follow After Surgery:

  • Exercise – Patients who exercise will accelerate weight loss and reduce side effects. Exercise will also increase patient morale and reduce depression. Patients should exercise for 30-35 minutes, 4 or 5 days per week.
  • Daily Meals – Patients will need to focus on three daily meals and healthy eating habits. Please reference our gastric sleeve diet to learn more.
  • 64-Ounces of Water – Patients will need to consume at least 8 glasses of water per day (more if the day is humid).
  • Daily Vitamins – Patients will need to consume the necessary daily vitamins required for post-operative patients.
  • 60-80 grams of Protein – Patients will need to consume 60-70 grams of protein a day, men will need to consume 75-85 daily grams.
  • Eating – Patients will follow all of the necessary dieting rules after surgery, these rule are designed to help reduce complications and side effects.
  • Minimize Carbs – Patients need to watch and minimize their intake of carbohydrates.
  • Weighing – Patients shouldn’t weigh themselves more than a few times a month. Patients need to think and behave in a long-term manner.

Weight Loss Plateaus and Exercise Guidelines

Most times patients who are in weight loss plateaus can easily adjust their lifestyle to jump off the plateaus. Patients consuming too many carbohydrates can easily be stuck in a plateau. Minimizing carbohydrates will normally break the weight loss plateaus – try exchanging carbohydrates with protein and fiber, which will keep you feel fuller longer.

If you’re undergoing a weight training program / exercise regime you could be stuck in a weight plateau. However your plateau could be not legitimate, muscle weighs more than fat and patients can be easily be mislead into believing they are not losing fat when they are. It’s important to look at your body to see how you’re improving.

For the first 30 days, patients should not engage in strenuous exercises including weight-lifting, running, or ab-crunches. We recommend that patients start by walking for 20 minutes for the first fourteen days after the surgery. After 15 days, patients can work up to 30-40 minutes of exercise per day.

  • Swimming – Wait at least 15 days before using the tub or the pool. Wounds can easily be infected if the wound has not fully healed. Overall, swimming is a great exercise that can include resistance training.
  • Weight Lifting – Wait at least 30 days after surgery to include lite resistance training. Use weights you can manage, and still incorporate cardiovascular exercise.

Fruits on a Weight Loss Post Op Plan?

We hate breaking the news to new post ops that their chocolate banana peanut butter protein shakes are killing their weight loss. Carbs are even more confusing when we add fruit to the basket already containing donuts and spinach.

Everyone knows that fruit is a healthy food right up there with vegetables, right? Yes, BUT it depends on which fruit and where you are in your weight loss. If your one year Honeymoon window is closing, you don’t want to be eating little banana slice sandwiches with peanut butter and raisins! That would be a bad thing.

Never Run Back to What Broke You …

Fruit has vitamins, minerals, and fiber but some of it is very high in carbohydrates. Keep track of all your carbs. Keep an eye on portion size and don’t eat canned fruit in syrup.

The goal of carb restriction is to force the body to burn stored fat. This involves eliminating the foods highest in carbohydrates: candy, soda, potatoes, macaroni, rice, crackers, chips, pasta and bread. Learn to live without them and change the way you choose food. Don’t moderate the bad choices back into your life.

Best Shortcut:  Don’t add a banana to your protein drink if you’re trying to lose weight.  Save this for maintenance stage.

Start Drinking Protein Before Bariatric Surgery

Lose at least a little weight most surgeons require that their surgical candidates lose weight just prior to surgery in an attempt to reduce the fatty composition of the liver. These surgeons usually recommend that you follow the typical pre op diet focusing on low carbohydrate and high protein foods and liquids. Use this condition of your surgery as an opportunity to start developing good habits and mentally prepare for your surgery.

Start Drinking Protein Now …

Make your protein choices and familiarize yourself with your post op dietary requirements. Use protein shakes to lose weight before your surgery and as a bonus nourish your body. People who are overweight normally have nutritional deficiencies and now would be a good time to eat properly and give your body the protein components it will need to fully heal your wounds after your surgery. Don’t wait until you get home from the hospital to buy protein.

Get your mind right ,,, the power of positive thinking cannot be underestimated:

Start thinking of all the exciting things that will unfold for you in exchange for all the hard work and determination. This surgery is not a walk in the park, but you can make the journey easier by making the right choices starting now.

Weight Loss Surgery You Have a Four Ounce Stomach

Things are different when you have a four ounce stomach instead of a big ole floppy handbag to fill with food. We used to save best for last, but now we’d better eat it first! Smart rules to live by. Share these tips with a bariatric friend or support group!

Chew

Try putting the fork on the table between bites. Chew well, eat slowly. Look for the signal that you are nearing fullness, so you can stop early enough. Not paying attention can put you in the “too full zone” and you will be MISERABLE.

Eat At Home

Chain restaurants achieve consistency of flavors with the use of processed sauces and packaged components that have hidden ingredients like high fructose corn syrup food starches and fat. At home, when you roast a chicken thigh and pair it with a simple salad you know what is on the plate. There isn’t really anything for us at Olive Garden now that we can’t eat breadsticks dipped in Alfredo sauce.

Cook

There are generations of people who do not know how to feed themselves. If you are one of them, break the obesity cycle and begin to cook meals for yourself, your family and friends. It’s healthier for everyone in the house.

Post Op Weight Loss Surgery Grocery Shopping

Shopping while adhering to the Bariatric Lifestyle can be challenging, yet fun. There is a whole new world of flavours that work for your new life, but it does not come naturally. People flighting obesity don’t step off the operating table knowing how to eat right, it takes patience, an open mind, and putting in the time to learn.

A few simple guidelines: take a copy of your post op guidelines with you, don’t go shopping while hungry or thirsty and you can be sure to leave with the right balance of items in your cart.

Always begin in the produce department, so you are making wise decisions while you are just beginning to shop. That way you aren’t feeling rushed or tired at the end of the trip, which can either cause you to skip the produce altogether, or make split decisions that may not be the best option. The deli counter has some wonderful options and some not so great choices. Say yes to minimally processed meats and cheeses, say no to creamy mayonnaise filled pasta salads and desserts, that have a ton of empty calories, sugar, and carbs.

The meat department is next. Stock up on lean meats and seafood. If you ask, your friendly meat cutter may cut your steak or chicken into six ounce portions for ease of preparation. Already weighed for you and ready to cook. It’s wonderful to have a variety of protein available in your refrigerator and freezer. Choose a meat and defrost in the fridge to later pan sauté with a green vegetable….voilà! Dinner is served.

Try to stay to the outside perimeter of the store, as processed foods full of carbs and sugar tend to hang out in the inner aisles. Make it a point to only go down an aisle if there is something in particular needed, to avoid the siren call of junk food that lies in wait.
Before and After Surgery

Park Far Away

You’ll feel amazing, strong and empowered as you check out, secure in the knowledge that you wisely selected items that will help you meet your goals. Plus you be eating really delicious food that’s also healthier for the ones you love.
Try to park as far away from the entrance of the store as possible (provided it is daytime and the lot is safe). Every step counts in being active!

Much success in your journey.
