Gastric Bypass Surgery

Full Gastric Bypass Surgery, also popularly known as Roux-en-Y (RNY) is a weight loss surgery that is very effective in treating morbid obesity if other regular weight loss could not give any results.

In Full Gastric Bypass Surgery the digestive stomach is reshaped to restrict the amount of food intake of the patient and its absorption; thus reducing the amount of fat and calorie ingestion.

Gastric Bypass Surgery in Mexico: How does it work?

By gastric bypass surgery the stomach is separated to form a pouch; thereby reducing the amount of food the patient can consume at one time. It also reduces the food absorption rate, which results in feeling less hungry. This makes the gastric bypass surgery an effective one for weight loss and obesity reduction.

The stomach pouch formed in this surgery is higher, smaller and round. It is separate from the rest of the stomach and is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine through a tube called the ‘roux limb’ or ‘food channel’.

Meanwhile, gastric juices from the stomach and digestive enzymes from the pancreas, and bile, continue secretion from the lower part of the stomach and duodenum down the small intestine. These two channels meet at a Y-shaped junction from which the procedure derives its name.

Expert surgeons in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico perform the full gastric bypass surgery with the help of a laparoscope. This tool requires very small incisions for its insertion. The camera at the end of it guides the process visually. The process does not result in major scars or sutures. It also helps seedy recovery than the other surgical processes. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately one to three hours, followed by a one to two day’s stay in the hospital.

Gastric Bypass surgery in Cancun, Tijuana: What are its benefits?

Full gastric bypass surgery can result in losing about 10 to 20 pounds per month. This will also depend on your post operative diet and exercise regime that can aid in losing about 50-70% of excess weight from the body within one to two years. Losing so much of weight after surgery may reduce other medical severities.
As full gastric bypass surgery takes very less time in comparison to other surgical weight loss procedures, patient stays in the hospital for much shorter period. It usually takes 30-45 minutes for the surgery and the patient will be free to walk within a couple of hours. The patient may be discharged within 24 to 48 hours depending on the patient’s condition.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Among the various wight loss surgeries, the mini gastric bypass surgery (MGB) is a laparoscopic, minimally invasive, simple, short very successful bariatric surgery.  The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) has excellent long term weight loss results and is considered a lower risk surgery.  This is a procedure which can be easily reversed or revised.  The Mini Gastric Bypass or MGB creates instead of a pouch, a long narrow tube that is then attached to the small intestine at about six feet from its starting point.  This bypasses the most highly absorptive section of the intestine.  There are no large incisions needed and this procedure is performed laparoscopically, lowering the risk or large surgical scars or hernias post op.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico: How does it work?

This surgery does not require large incisions on the abdomen as it is done through laparoscopic methods. It reduces stomach as a long narrow tube and partitioned into two sections, a smaller and a larger. The smaller portion is put to use and the larger one is sealed away from the small intestine.
This actually is similar to having a small stomach. This reduces food intake by a large extent. Small stomach cannot hold large quantity of food and hence less fat and calories are absorbed by the body.
Mini gastric bypass surgery in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico takes not more than 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. As the procedure is done by laparoscopic method, the recovery period is shortened. Patients can begin walking within two to three hours after the operation and will be discharged from the hospital within 48 hours.

How is the operation performed?

In the first part of mini gastric bypass surgery the stomach is divided and a small tube of stomach created which becomes the pouch.  This is the restrictive part of the procedure and means that only a very small amount of food can be taken at any one time.
Next, the surgeon brings up a loop of bowel (about 200cm long) and joins this to the lower part of the stomach pouch.  (The joining of bowel to bowel, or stomach to bowel is called an “anastamosis”).  This means that food passes from the small pouch into the small bowel where it meets the digestive juices which have moved downwards from the main part of the stomach.  In effect, therefore, about 2m of small bowel has been bypassed before absorption of food (and calories) can take place.  Fewer calories absorbed, means weight loss.

Sample Surgery Agenda for Mini Gastric Bypass patients in Tijuana and Cancun:

For International Patients that arrive from the US or Canada we pick them up at the International Airport in SanDiego or Cancun, Mexico and bring them to our hospital where we do all of the pre.op lab-work, EKG and chest x. ray.  Patients read and sign all the consent forms, make final payment and then get prepped for surgery.  They will then meet with their surgical team and have the chance to go over all the details of the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery.  Once surgery is completed, they will move to the post op area for two hours and then to their private hospital room to rest and recover for 48 hours.  48 hours post op, they meet once again with the surgical team to have their post op testing performed.  They will then be released and given post op indications and medications to take.  They will be transported to their accommodations for an additional 24 hours and they are then free to return to airport and home.

Mini Gastric Bypass surgery: Is it reversible?

The best feature of the mini gastric bypass surgery is that it is reversible. In cases the patients did not benefit as expected from the surgery, this reversibility makes it possible to undergo any alternative weight loss surgeries such as lap-band, gastric sleeve or full gastric bypass. This surgery also requires less post operative attention and makes for a much easier recovery.
Mini Gastric Bypass surgery in Mexico: Is it expensive?
The Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery (MGB)  in Cancun or in Tijuana, Mexico is far less expensive as the duration of operating time and post operative care is much shorter in comparison to the other surgical weight loss approaches.  To undergo MGB in Cancun or Tijuana, Mexico is far less expensive as the duration of operating time and post operative care is much shorter in comparison to the other surgical weight loss approaches.

As with the standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) the Mini Gastric Bypass (MGBP) works both by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten at any one time, and by altering gut hormones involved in appetite control.   Today, because of developments in laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery, MGBP has started to come back into fashion and is being promoted as a quick and effective alternative to standard Gastric Bypass.

Mini Gastric Bypass surgery: What are its benefits?

The Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery (MGB) is found to be effective in causing an improvement in many of the associated symptoms, like:
  • High blood pressure
  • Triglycerides
  • Diabetes
  • Gastro Esophageal

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric Sleeve Surgery is a relatively new procedure of bariatric surgery. This surgery is known by many names as well like: Gastric Sleeve Resection,Sleeve Gastrectomy, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Tube Gastrectomy, laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and VSG.

This surgical procedure for obesity treatment is suitable for the people who are fearful of undergoing other invasive weight loss surgeries. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery quotes that, “This is the most useful application of gastric sleeve surgery at this time, because it appears to be faster and/or easier than other weight loss surgeries in these high-risk people”.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico: How does it work?

Though initially designed for acute obesity correction, these days this process is carried out on people with low BMI as well. This surgery is performed with the help of a laparoscope, so there is no major incisions on the body. A small part of the stomach that is responsible for the secretion of ‘hunger hormones’ is removed with the help of the laparoscope. This reduces your hunger pangs. The leftover portion of the stomach is sealed with staples.

This surgery is much less complex than other surgeries like mini gastric bypass or full gastric bypass. In gastric sleeve surgery the pyloric valve and small intestine are left intact. This surgery does not involve any implants or insertion of any medical device into the body.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery: What are its advantages?

This surgery is effective in losing 30-50% of excess weight for the first six to twelve months. Patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery can expect to lose 60-70% of their excess weight. If weight loss is insufficient following the surgery, other mal-absorptive weight loss surgeries such as the mini gastric bypass or full gastric bypass can be performed for further weight loss.

Gastric Balloon Surgery

The Intra Gastric Balloon is a non-surgical very minimal invasive procedure that involves the placement of an empty silicone balloon into the stomach endoscopically and then it is filled with a blue tinted saline solution. Patients are under sedation during this procedure. The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and patients are able to return to their accommodations very shortly afterwards.

The adjustment period is approximately 2 to 3 days. The Intra Gastric Balloon is a great way to lose weight and it is a completely reversible procedure. A normal weight loss in a 6 month period is anywhere from 30 – 40 lbs.

Intra Gastric Balloon Procedure in Cancun, Tijuana, Mexico: How does it work?

The Intra Gastric Balloon System is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical aid in the treatment of obesity. Together with a nutritional plan and behavior modification program, it can help patients reach their weight loss goals.

The Intra Gastric Balloon System is made of a gentle, expandable balloon, a placement tube and a filling station so our bariatric surgeon can orally insert the weight loss aid.
Once inserted in the stomach, the empty balloon is filled with sterile, blue, saline solution. When full, the balloon is too large to pass into the bowel and will now float freely in the stomach offering a good restriction on the amount of food a patient can consume post procedure.

Gastric Ballon Surgery

Intra Gastric Balloon: What are its advantages?

The Intra Gastric Balloon currently can be placed for six months. Longer periods of use are not suggested. With time the acidic content of the stomach will weaken and break down the balloon material and cause the balloon to deflate inside of the stomach. If your physician recommends a use of the gastric balloon for longer than six months, it is necessary that the balloon be replaced with a new one when the six-month interval has been met.

Intra Gastric Balloon Procedure in Cancun and Tijuana, Mexico

In short, the main features of gastric balloon procedure can be summarized as:
It is important for patients to understand that the Intra Gastric Balloon Procedure is a tool to weight reduction and must be used together with a prescribed diet and behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose will depend on how closely you follow your diet. How long you maintain your weight loss will depend on how completely you adopt long-term lifestyle changes involving eating behavior and exercise.

More than likely the presence of the gastric balloon in the stomach will cause nausea or vomiting for a few days after inserted. Your Doctor will prescribe medication to relieve these feelings.
There also exists the possibility that you will lose only a small amount of weight or lose no weight at all while using the balloon. As stated earlier, your commitment and desire to change and lose weight is a pivotal factor in the success of the intra gastric balloon.
